The Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded since 1901 for outstanding contributions to physics. Einstein received the 1921 prize — held over that year and awarded in November 1922 — “for his services to Theoretical Physics, and especially for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect”: pointedly not for relativity, still considered controversial.

As promised in their divorce arrangement, the prize money went to his first wife, Mileva Marić — the interest was hers, while the capital was meant to secure their two sons.
