On 4 October 2022 the Nobel Prize in Physics went to Alain Aspect, John Clauser and Anton Zeilinger for experiments with entangled photons that established the violation of Bell’s inequalities. In plain terms: their work proved that the quantum world really does behave in the strange, non-local way that quantum mechanics predicts.

That settles a question Einstein himself raised. In the 1935 EPR paper he argued that entanglement’s “spooky action at a distance” was so absurd that quantum theory had to be incomplete. The experiments showed he was wrong on that point — yet his sharp objection helped launch the entire field of quantum information.
